Why Oscar
We're a family business that started life making good honest pet food for working dogs
and supermarkets. It was a fantastic start with formulations for Sainsbury's and Linda
McCartney. However, we found that customers had little guidance on what to feed their
pets. Choosing the right food was a minefield and the level of service seemed
non-existent. Getting it right was so important because, just like humans, pets 'are what
they eat'.
We have always believed that when it comes to nutrition it's too important to settle for
second best. In 1993, we took matters into our own hands and the first Oscar franchise was
established. The Complete Pet Care Service was born and since then Oscar has kept a firm
focus on the developments in pet food manufacturing, while devoting time to its growing
franchise network.
Our founder Martin Dancy (BSc Animal Nutrition) owned the original Oscar. Oscar, the Great
Dane, was our proud mascot and many people will remember him as a friendly addition to the
company.
Experts in Pet Nutrition
We discovered that a local Oscar Nutritional Advisor is the best person to give
friendly, expert advice. Whether the pet is fat or thin, young or old, healthy, has
allergies or is generally tearing the place apart, Oscar can help. Our aim is to make life
easier for pet owners across the UK.
Repeat Business
Oscar customers are delighted with our service and remain loyal, often referring
friends and family.
Be Your Own Boss
Our unique business system continues to build on years of success, offering individuals
the freedom to run their own business and benefit from a lifestyle dedicated to working
with pets to deliver a happier, healthier and longer life.
Free Home Delivery
Convenience defines the unique Oscar opportunity. Our friendly customer service
includes free home delivery, a free meal (sampled in the home), a quality competitive
brand (no middle man) as well as nutritional and behavioural advice. It's what makes our
tried and tested formula a winner.
Success Breeds Success
With a wealth of experience in the Oscar network we are continually improving the
system. One of our first ideas was to offer a Freephone Helpline to ensure that every
Oscar pet had a personal Nutritional Advisor to assist with the right diet - and that was
only the beginning....
Anyone can apply - from bank managers, accountants, teachers and manual workers to
farmers wishing to diversify. For those retiring from HM Forces to Police or IT workers -
ideal for veterinary nurses or carers and many more. They have all become Oscar
franchisees.

CASE STUDIES
Sue Watkins - Baltonsborough, Glastonbury
February 2005
My voluntary work for Greyhound rescue set the scene for my future, although working on
the front desk at the local police station taught me all I needed to know about dealing
with people. I wanted to bring a better balance to my life, and having five dogs, all in
need of love and attention, led me to Oscar and the idea of working for myself.
Searching the web site strengthened my desire to become self-employed and by learning from
other people's experiences confirmed that it was now time to be my own boss. Oscar's
quality products helped make up my mind and I intend to involve my family of pets to
promote the business, especially when it comes to displaying prime examples of a good
diet.
Kevin and Stephanie Darnell - Dunvant, Swansea
September 2003
After fifteen years of working in a factory environment I was ready for a change, and
self-employment through franchising seemed to be the best way forward. I knew very little
about franchising and therefore searched the Internet and the British Franchise Exhibition
at the NEC before making any decisions. With so many opportunities to look at I found
myself drawn to the family-orientated situation at Oscar, and having two cats also
provided a link. My wife helps me on a part-time basis and our aim is to be successful and
happy.
OSCAR TAKES THE BRONZE
Everyone is a winner and it's now official that OSCAR is the most successful UK pet
food home delivery franchise, winning the Bronze award in the British Franchise
Association's 2008 Franchisor of the Year Awards.
These awards were set out to
acknowledge the high calibre of bfa members. The theme for this year was "Now and
then, five years on" required its applicants to demonstrate just how their business
has developed over the past five years.
Oscar's well deserved recognition for outstanding achievements during this time will pay
dividends. They have continually developed their business model to support their network
of franchisees. They are committed to establish a strong partnership, ensuring they
maximise growth, while building a sustainable and profitable businesses.
Fifteen years of dedication and commitment is one thing to boast but to achieve this
prestigious award is a well-deserved additional placement for Oscar to celebrate. Richard
Dancy, Oscar's Sales Marketing Director, is over the moon. "We were extremely proud
to become finalists but to be placed third confirms that all our changes and improvements
impressed the panel enough to offer recognition of our progress. We can now showcase the
efforts and success of everyone associated with Oscar."
As for the management, staff and franchisees at Oscar - this accolade will maximise the
future of their business in many ways.
Any new franchisee wishing to join Oscar can now do so with the confidence of knowing that
they are looking at a franchisor with a reputable reputation.
STAY COOL WITH OSCAR
The Oscar message for a happier healthier and longer life comes with the complete pet
care service and, in conjunction with their range of quality pet food, there is a
selection of products that will help to keep our pets cool for summer.
Be prepared...
The heat breeds fleas and parasites - causing very unpleasant skin conditions if
not treated. Prevention is better than cure and Oscar can supply you with all the right
treatments to keep the bugs away.
Grooming - in the summer you need to pay extra attention to brushing and combing
your pet's coat. Removing any loose hair and tangles will help them to feel clean and
fresh.
Water - plenty of it! Always make sure that their water bowls are full of fresh,
clean, cool water. Never go out for a walk without taking water with you.
Keep your pet in the shade or in a cool area at all times - overheating is
dangerous.
Pets with pale skin really do need to wear a sun block - especially on their nose
and ears.
Animals too experience skin damage from intense sun rays.
Heat exhaustion is a little like sunstroke - if your pet is panting excessively,
drooling and restless you must slowly cool it down and then go to the vet.
Be aware...
Dogs die in hot cars. Pet owners must realise that there is no safe way to leave a dog in
the car during warm or hot weather conditions.
If you park your car in the shade, the position of the sun will change.
A little sun can turn a car into an oven with temperatures of over 49 degrees.
Dogs' only sweat glands are on the soles of their feet, and up to 90% of their body
is covered with hair. Panting and salivating causes them to lose massive amounts of fluid
and they dehydrate quickly.
Very young and old animals are more susceptible to heat.
Leaving windows open or putting a bowl of water in the car does not help.
If a dog becomes overheated, give it an immediate shower or bath in cool water. Call the
vet as soon as possible. Once a dog goes into shock and loses consciousness it may be too
late! (Information RSPCA) |
